IWM – Daks over Duxford
June 4 at 8:00 am - June 5 at 5:00 pm£25
As part of IWM’s D-Day75 anniversary week of events Daks Over Duxford will bring the extraordinary story of D-Day to life, uniting the greatest number of Douglas C-47 Skytrain and Dakota aircraft in one location since the Second World War.
Visitors will be able to see more than 30 Dakotas – aircraft synonymous with the D-Day Landings – as well as mass parachute jumps and flight displays taking place across the museum. This Second World War mass flight display will culminate in a cross-channel flight and parachute landing in Normandy on 6 June, recreating the remarkable Second World War story.
On the ground, D-Day related displays, activities and programming will further bring the extraordinary story of D-Day to life. All hangars and exhibitions across the site will be open, including Land Warfare, home to The Normandy Experience exhibition which brings visitors the sounds and sights of the D-Day landings.
Given the current high level of interest in these events, we anticipate that IWM Duxford will be more busy than usual from Sunday 2 until Thursday 6 June. As is the case with air shows, we will be providing overspill parking to accommodate the increase in visitors, and restrictions will be put in place on a number of roads.
Grange Road will be closed to all traffic including pedestrians in the interest of public safety and to maintain access for Emergency Services to the south side of the airfield. However, access for local residents and businesses will be maintained throughout and stewards will be present to assist.
We do appreciate that these activities and safety precautions may have an impact on residents in areas neighbouring IWM Duxford. We are taking what measures we can to mitigate the impact on the local community. We also understand that the flying displays will result in increased noise levels in the local area over these few days. We apologise for the inconvenience that this may cause and will do what we reasonably can to reduce this.
We will be including information about the programme in our local community newsletter, which will be distributed later in March, and residents will be able to find more details on the IWM website. We will also include the IWM Duxford D-Day 75 programme on the agenda for the next Neighbours’ Forum at IWM Duxford, to be held in early May, which will give your representatives the opportunity to discuss the programme directly with the IWM team.
We are grateful for your ongoing support to IWM and very much hope to welcome you and the residents of your parishes to IWM Duxford for this historic event.
