Mary Prudence Wakefield

Mary was born in Duxford on July 30th 1912, the daughter of Albert & Ellen Haylock and sister to Ernest & Herbert.
After leaving school Mary went to work as a cook with the Miss Brands at Ickleton, later moving to Pedleys of Whittlesford, cabinet makers, where she worked on radio cabinet assembly. On leaving Pedleys she went to work for a glove making company Bullen Peasgood in Sawston. 
 
Mary married Gilbert Arthur Wakefield of Sawston on March 25th 1940 at St  Peter's Church, Duxford, after which they moved into a newly
built house at 14 London Road, Sawston.
In  January 1943, Mary gave birth to a son John and lived the life of a housewife, with occasional part time work glove making both at home and at the G H Wakefield family business at 64 London Road, Sawston. Along with Gilbert she shared a passion for gardening and was well known for her flower stall outside No 14 London Road. They were both members of  the Sawston and Pampisford Horticultural Society.

Mary  learnt to drive in the 1960s and was well known driving her Morris Marina car, which she continued to drive until 2003 and at the great age of 91.
After the death of Gilbert in 1999, Mary remained at 14 London Road, until 2007 when she went into a residential care home, firstly at Shelford  Lodge, Great Shelford, and later in 2012 to Home Close, Fulbourn, where she remained until her death on Wednesday 15th April 2015 aged 102.
